Justice Room

Removal of the Justice Room.

A Brief History

By 1819 Inserted within the upper volume of the west half of the original kitchen and approached from a new doorway cut through from the landing off the stair from the North entrance. Chimneypiece and panelling dates from this time. [NRO 1819*] Used as the Justice Room, but adopted as the Steward’s Room 1909.

1909 Dunn & Watson Floor removed and reconstructed at higher level as part of opening up void under the room as a serving room. To accommodate change in height:  • the landing of north stair was raised by an extra step and three steps were introduced at doorway into the room. • Chimneypiece and cupboards on west wall raised to new level, • panelling reduced in height and bulkheads introduced on north and south sides of room to accommodate windows to new servery below [NRO 1909].

What's to do

The room is stripped out and fittings salvaged for reuse. The windows G18/w1-w2 are returned to serve as the upper lights of windows B18/w1-w2. Door G18/d1 and associated steps to the Kitchen Stair G16 is blocked up. Whilst of some interest, the space was substantially reconstructed in 1909, and the removal of the Justice Room returns the house to an earlier plan form.  It also facilitates the reuse of the basement storey as a convenient family kitchen set a a single level.
