Reopening of two-bay Stair Shaft above G15.

A Brief History

Site of two-bay Second Stair of 1630s house surviving evidence in Ground Floor mezzanine store GM15a (4-centred arch and pendant).

By 1819 second stair rebuilt as staight flight stair from ground floor to attic storey.

1909 lowest flight of stair cleared away to create butlers pantry G15.

What's to do

Original shaft to be reconstructed incorporating G15, GM15a-c, F15a-b, FM15b, S15a-b.

A Brief History

1819 Butlers Pantry occupies only east side of space and approached directly from Corridor. Fireplace introduced.

1909 lowest flight of stair cleared away and space incorporated into Butlers Pantry. Floor of mezzanine over taken out and raised to give additional head room in G15. Door to corridor G15/d1 blocked up and Butlers Pantry approached from Kitchen Stair G16.

1942 as 1909.

Post 1942 Door to Corridor G15/d1 reopened.

What's to do

Butlers pantry stripped out to reinstate base of stair shaft. Fireplace blocked up. Safe removed. Kitchen fittings stripped out. Floor of mezzanine over taken out and reintroduced with well at original height with lower ceiling in G15. Stair reintroduced on North wall all to match those above in oak with balustrade as S15b.
