Rear Entrance Corridor

Restoration of Rear (East) Entrance corridor G14.

A Brief History

c1717 East Entrance remodelled externally for Sir Thomas Powys with new steps and door surround.

1740s remodelled internally with arcaded motif and enriched cornice by Flitcroft.

Late 19C Oak doors set beneath radiused fanlight illustrated at G14/d3 [before 1901 Country Life].

Early 20C East Entrance door G14/d3 replaced with present half glazed oak doors and new fanlight set beneath new timber fanlight (Possibly Dunn and Watson).

1900 Cowtan introduction of arcaded motif to north and south walls. Introduction of lobby screen and door (G14/d3) to east door formed using salvaged joinery, possibly from north side of lobby G10, supplemented by new mahogany doorleaf.

20C Construction of cupboard and radiator casings on side walls. Insertion of dropped ceiling over draught lobby.

What's to do

Removal of 20C alterations: Screen with door G14/d3 removed (Doorleaf set aside for reuse at G3/d3). Dropped ceiling over east section of G14 taken down and Flitcroft ceiling at high level revealed. Timber cupboard and radiator casing removed. The opening up of the East Entrance reverses details that ignored Flitcroft compartmentation of the space and concealed his ceiling which remains insitu.
