Mezzanine Staircase

Removal of Mezzanine Staircase G12d, and introduction of food hoist and lavatories G12d and GM12a.

A Brief History

By 1819 two closets serving G12 (Mr Powys's Room).

Late 19th Century following introduction of butlers rooms, west closet used as passageway joining accommodation to kitchen stair G16.

1909 Dunn & Watson. Closets removed at ground and meezzanine levels and replaced with new stair to mezzanine then used as kitchen offices (Still Room and Houskeepers Room).

Late 20th Century blank archway cut through at B12a/d1 joining mezzanine stair to Cross Corridor G12a. Door to kitchen stair G12d/d1 closed, door to butlers rooms blocked up.

What's to do

Mezzanine stair removed, floor and space reinstated following closet plan form. Opening to corridor G12d/d1 blocked up. East section: food hoist introduced connecting to Servants Hall (pantry) G12b on lower floor. West section: (at ground floor) converted to lavatory opening off Kitchen Stair G16 with G12d/d1 reinstated. (At mezzanine level) floor reinstated and space adapted as lavatory GM12a off office GM18a.
