Upper Serving Room

Alterations to Upper Serving (Store) Room G12.

A Brief History

18th Century referred to as Mr Powys's Room.

By 1819 Corridor terminated by door at G12b/d1 aligned centrally on corridor. Two closets occupy site of present mezzanine stair G12d.

Early 20th Century Cowtan introduction of borrowed light window above door G12b/d1.

By 1909 Room subdivided to form Butlers Bedroom (south half) and Sitting Room (north half). Passage joining sitting room to west stair and new mezzanine stair introduced in place of closets.

By 1942 door G12b/d1 terminating corridor blocked up access to Butlers rooms only via butlers passage from mezzanine stair.

1980 Butlers rooms converted to male and female cloakrooms for proposed country club. Access to mezzanine stair from G12c blocked up and new access formed within corridor at blank opening G12a/d1.

1990 Reinstated as one space, new chimney piece introduced, room replastered.

What's to do

The space is again re-subdivided to provide serving room G12c in north section and an extension of corridor (G12c). The new door G12c/d1 will be painted timber to match moulded six panel doorset at G15/d1. Carlite plaster is replaced in limeplaster and the cornice is run in lime plaster with gypsum cast enrichment to match that in adjacent corridor. In the Serving Room G12c, the late 20th century reproduction chimney piece and shelving on the south wall are removed and the walls reinstated as plain plaster. Kitchen units are installed. Access is formed to the food hoist accommodated in a new shaft in place of the mezzanine stair G12d. The stone flooring in G12a is extended to G12b..
