Best Bedroom

Restoration of Flitcroft’s design in the Bed Chamber F1.

A Brief History

17C assumed to be the Best-Bedchamber of William Elmes’ new house forming part of the apartment that extended along the whole of the west range.

1740s recast by Flitcroft. Chimneypiece and overmantle (overmantle lost but imprint remains). Modillion cornice. Walls plain above dado and skirting. Bed alcove formed on south wall supported by symmetrical composition of panelling with doors and over-door panels. Window bay supported by lion garlands.

By 1840s Bed Alcove reduced to nominal depth within the thickness of the internal wall.

1900 redecoration by Cowtan as Lady Lilford’s Boudoir. Panel mouldings introduced to walls and mouldings enriched with planted decoration. Panelling extended over windows F1/w1-w2.
