Kitchen Staircase

Alteration to Kitchen Stairs

A Brief History

The Kitchen Stair also served the North Entrance.  The importance of its details, such as the succession of arched openings confirms that it was of high status and possibly indicates that it led to the original stables.  The details are all of the 17C house with modifications from Sir Thomas’s acquisition, such as the fanlight over B17/d1.

1909 Part of alteration to provide cellar stair through Servants’ Hall. Pintels indicate double doors. The mezzanine stair was introduced by Dunn & Watson. The area provided a link between the kitchen stair G16a and the butler’s rooms G12.
